La Maison de l'Eau, a former pumping station at Cabazat Cabazat

Closed since 1971, this building houses the first information and discovery exhibition dedicated to the heritage of water and its environment.

The engineer Frederick Suisse developed the system using the amazing power of the river to pump water from the fontaine des Chartreux. The distribution of drinking water started in Cahors in 1854 with the inauguration of the Cabazat pumping station.

This centre aims to encourage the public to discover Cahors and its area. All the major sites of the Midi-Pyrenees are also promoted.

The centre offers a range of permanent exhibitions:

  • The history and operation of the old pumping station
  • Discovery Valentré bridge, a masterpiece of medieval defensive architecture
  • Water in Cahors, its history and the use of a vital resource, the Fontaine des Chartreux
  • Amenities of a major element of the landscape: the river Lot

Touch-screens invite an original and personal discovery of the city and its surroundings (river heritage, famous people etc.). The centre is regularly enriched by exhibitions in connection with the theme of water and its uses.

Admission free.
