This former prison was one the palace of Via. This palace, built in the 14th century by Pierre Via, the brother-in-law of Pope John XXII (born in Cahors), was rebuilt in the 17th century and became a prison from 1790. More than 200 years of history As a departmental prison, it is the oldest prison in France. In 2006, there were still sixty detainees. It closed its doors in July 2012.

One of its chimneys, dating from the fourteenth century, today deposited, used to serve as a lighthouse in order to tell the boatmen the location of the port of Cahors.
